So who’s seen it? You know, Jodie Marsh and psychotherapist Marisa Peer debating tattoos on ITV’s This Morning?

There’s a few things I would have liked to have said to Marisa, if I had been on the for side and sitting in Jodie’s chair…
Marisa says that people with a sleeve of tattoos look impulsive, and while there’s nothing wrong with being impulsive, I think a person with a sleeve actually looks quite the opposite. They look like they have committed themself to getting a large piece of art on their skin. A sleeve is a significant undertaking and cannot just be decided on spur of the moment. And just because most of the people Marisa knows regret their body art, that does not mean that everyone will.
Also, Jodie talks at length about her tattoos having meaning, mine don’t all have meaning yet I do not regret them. Some I just like because of how they look and because I wanted to collect a piece of art from the tattoo artist who created it.
Another important point that doesn’t often get mentioned, everyone always talks about the permanency of tattoos, yet our bodies are not permanent. We are transient beings who won’t live forever and I think I would regret not getting tattooed more than I would collecting art on my skin while I am alive.
There’s lots more I could say about tattoos and the ridiculous amount of press they are receiving at minute – but I think Dr Matt Lodder (tattooed art historian) summmed up this particular ITV tacky/tasteful debate quite nicely in a tweet earlier today: “Are tattoos tasteful or trashy?”, @itvthismorning asked. Neither. Both. Tattooing is a medium, not a message.
I would be interested to see what Doctor Lodder would have to say, had he been on the This Morning sofa instead of Jodie Marsh….

I don’t know why debate is so heated at the minute. As a tattooed person I don’t judge others for not having ink…
unfair. this lady they interviewed looks trashy with or without her tattoos (i don’t know who she is). and even if she does look trashy… we’re not defined by what we wear (clothes or tattoos).
I think she was picked for a reason…but I don’t think she came across too bad in the end…at least she doesn’t regret her tattoos…
As much as I like Jodie Marsh, I really do, I think it’s her personality and that show she did on bullying… in any case, as much as I like her, ITV showed how bias and ill informed they end up being one-sided, putting her in a debate about tattoos being trashy, when, for the entire country, this woman has, for a long time, represented what trashy is. Just google her, belt as bra and so on. I would have loved to see you, or Matt Lodder, or a tattoo artist, someone who would really make the point instantly.
It seems a silly trend at the moment, don’t know who/what caused, but these silly detractors should come to Barcelona where the tattoo culture is a HUGE thing, sleeves are worn by boys, girls, men, women, gay men, straight women, and so on. They all look amazing, and they all dress with such style you cannot help but look at them and admire the way they look.
I know, I do quite like her too….but it seems that she was picked by people who already have certain prejudices against tattoos…you’re right, how can you can someone who is called by most ‘trashy’ to argue against something being trashy?
I guess everyone would fight the tattoo corner in different ways though…I might have said lots of different things, as I am sure Matt or a tattoo artist would…
I also did like some of the points Jodie made and I don’t actually think she came across that badly, there was just certain points of the interview when I really wished I could butt in!
Complete fluff debate with no real depth, it was all opinion. I think there is a good discussion to be had on the subject and some good points were made about tattoos purely for fashion, but I don’t think the intention was to do anything but skim the most superficial surface of the topic and get these two women some airtime, otherwise they’d have had someone like Dr Lodder on the ‘pro’ side and someone with a decent and reasoned ‘con’ argument beyond “I don’t like them”.
With my cynical hat on: Jodie has a new TV show and is ‘doing the circuit’ (from her twitter account, two TV appearances in two days) and Marisa has a new book out soon which I’m sure she’s also keen to promote. Marisa is a therapist who seems to specialise in diet and weight loss and just happens to not like tattoos, Jodie is a well known tattoo’d lady and (apparently?) trained as a tattoo artist. Strikes me that this debate was just a means to get them both on the TV and keep them in the public eye.
You’re right, Chris, it’s complete fluff and pure opinion and obvious that both ladies need to promote themselves at the moment. Not a decent argument at all…I don’t know if they even answered their own question by the end of the whole debate…
Would love to see Dr Lodder and someone who has a proper argument against tattoos thrashing it out…
Maybe we can organised our own live debate and film it? Show This Morning how to do it…
Apparently Jodie Marsh made a TV show about becoming a tattoo apprentice…must try to locate it…
There has been alot of talk about this on the radio of late also. I am tattooed. I have started to recieve more feedback etc about my tattoos since I have started getting more larger sized tattoos. People who are tattooed dont make those who arent feel of less worth or talk down about them so why should it be the other way around.
They were once a permanent statement of rebellion, but today, tattoos – or body art, as they are known – are a common sight.
