“Tattoos leave an imprint on everyone – whether good or bad. I thought this was so interesting, and I guess I got hooked,” interview with tattoo artist Edvin Tedebring

Tattoo artist Edvin Tedebring (@e.tedebring) has been tattooing for seven years and now works at Dropout in Copenhagen. Back when he first started, he thought about giving up, but his wife encouraged him to keep going – and we’re so glad he did. His work is monochrome with a beautiful ethereal quality to it and his tattoos are a collaboration with each tattoo collector. He takes us back on his journey to discover how his style has become what it is today…

When and why did you first fall in love with tattoos?

I honestly think my love for tattoos was always there. I found tattoos fascinating and intriguing – even as a kid. Tattoos seemed to leave an imprint on everyone, whether good or bad. I thought this was so interesting, and I guess I got hooked.

The interest in making it a career probably started out when Miami Ink was popular on TV. My drawings started becoming influenced by tattoo designs I saw. I pretty much made up my mind that I would make this a career, even though my designs were absolutely terrible at the time.

How long have you been tattooing for? What was it like learning?

I have been tattooing for seven years now. When I started out, I did an apprenticeship in the north of Sweden, where I am from. I remember the first time I tattooed synthetic skin, and I came home to my girlfriend, now wife, and told her this is not for me. I thought I was so bad that I would never manage to ever learn, so I’d better just quit immediately. Luckily for me, she pushed me to continue and she has kept on pushing me since the first day in this career. If it was not for her, I don’t think I would be where I am today.

With that said, it was tough in the beginning. I kept developing slowly but steadily and I worked really hard to make this a serious career. I am glad I didn’t give up, even though I considered it several times.

How did you develop your style to what it is today? What draws you to using just one colour?

When I started out I was drawn to gothic and horror themed tattoos. At the time, I thought that was what I wanted to keep doing. But as I progressed, I felt like a copy of a copy, and the horror motives felt so generic and repetitive. I needed to do something different.

I started adding abstract elements such as splatters and sketchy lines to my designs, to make them into something different. This led to me going more and more abstract and away from the gothic styles towards more peaceful and calm motives. That is where I essentially found myself, and that is where I am now. I am still developing ,of course, but I do believe I will be within this realm of style for a long time – if not the rest of my career.

I only use black and grey because I never personally liked colours. Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate some great colour work out there, but it was never something I wanted to either make or wear myself. How I think in terms of design is simply monochrome.

Your tattoos have an ethereal artistic quality to them. Do you consider yourself an artist, first and foremost?

It is interesting that you should ask that. I actually consider myself a designer rather than an artist. Before I got into tattooing I did a bachelor’s degree in Digital Media Production; where graphic design, UX / UI design, communication and photography were some of my favorite focuses.

With that in mind, I make great use of my eye for design and knowledge from my education in my tattoo work. I combine my graphic design skills and abstract artistic side to create my work. I don’t have any training in fine arts or such, and therefore I just consider myself a designer and a tattoo artist.

How do you usually work with customers? Is the process a collaboration?

All my work is custom, based on the communication with my collectors. Normally we will exchange ideas and thoughts and then I will make my design and present it to them on the day we meet for the session. Sometimes I draw the design freely on the skin, in which case I first sit down with my collector looking at inspiration from my previous work, to get an idea of what they want.

I sometimes make design concepts I want to do and post them as available, but I do that less and less now, as I prefer custom work.

Do you love to travel? Where have you been and where’s next?

I do love to travel, yes. Part of why I like this career is due to the travelling and the opportunities that it creates. My next trip will be to London, where I have been many times before. I enjoy that city a lot.

Which artists do you admire and why?

I like a lot of different artists, both within tattooing and other forms. I have had the pleasure of meeting a lot of fantastic tattoo artists over the years, and they each leave something that I take with me. Whether technical skill, entrepreneurial skill or anything else. I admire any artists who stay true to themselves and their vision.

Are you planning any guest spots? If so where and how do we book in?

This year I did a lot of guest spots and the last one will be London in November. I will be guesting at EXP Haus / 10a Collective. Then I will go to Berlin in January. It’s all booked up already, but normally I take requests through my website etedebring.com.

What are your hopes for the future?

I always have a lot of big hopes and plans for my own journey, but I keep them quiet until I’ve made progress worth sharing.

As for the tattoo world, I hope we all can embrace the new era of tattooing and stop with the gatekeeping and negative attitudes. Tattooing is part of the creator economy, and everyone has to adapt if they want to remain in the game. That means working as an entrepreneur and an artist. The tattoo industry has never been better, in my opinion. It holds endless opportunities for the ones who are willing and hungry.

Interview with outstanding tattoo artist NAKKAB

Tattooist NAKKAB creates incredible tattoos that flow with his client’s bodies. We caught up with the artist to find out more about his style, process and plans for the future…

How did you get into the industry? 

I got into it the old school way I would say. I was young and full of energy! You know; cleaning around the studio, making tea for clients, setting up the stations, taking bookings etc. That’s when I learned most about tattoo equipments and hygiene, and of course how to tattoo. I was an apprentice for about seven months, by the end of my apprenticeship I was already tattooing clients. 

I’ve now been tattooing for around eight years and I enjoy every year more than the other.

What made you want to become a tattoo artist?

When I think back, I can say that the roots took hold back in my childhood. I was working as an apprentice at a barber shop between the ages of 10-12. I remember one evening when our boss got a tattoo inside the barber shop! It was a wing tattoo on his neck. I was fascinated by the process as it was pretty badass and looked very cool to me. Just as I turned 18, I got my first tattoo and that day I decided to do my research on how to become a tattoo artist in Turkey.

How would you describe your tattooing style? 

To describe it quickly we can say abstract tattooing. But of course this is not enough so I named my technique as “sernakkab”. This is where I use the possibilities of traditional Turkish marbling (ebru) and blend them into the individual’s skin by taking their muscle and bone anatomy as a reference.

It’s a combination of traditional paper marbling and contemporary tattooing with a minimalistic approach.

What inspired your unique style?

I studied fine arts and painting when I was in Istanbul. There we had a class called “Traditional Turkish Arts”. It was optional to take the class but I went for it to grow my vision, since we were mostly taught about contemporary art and Bauhaus school disciplines. I was so inspired by that class and I wanted to blend it into the lineworks I was working on then. At first it was a bit experimental, I was showing my designs to our professors and they were giving me constructive comments. In time I got more and more conscious and deliberate with what I was doing. 

Can you tell us more about performing humanity in an artistic way?

That has been written in my bio for years now. I don’t even know if it’s gramatically correct but it sounds poetic. It means that with my artistic identity, I am actually performing as a human, rather than just being one.

What’s the process behind your pieces? 

In my atelier I have a corner where I create shapes through marbling. I usually spend time there and work on new designs on different papers. When my clients ask for a design, I search through these papers and pick the one that fits their vibe. Then I study the individual’s body part where they want the tattoo.

In the end I blend the design with the anatomy of my client so that it flows on them. On the tattooing day we make slight adjustments if necessary. Sometimes I go freehand on some parts of the tattoo. Eventually we end up with a tattoo that is organic and unique for each individual.

How long do they take? 

Smaller works usually take about two to three hours. Bigger works mostly vary from four to eight hours. Even though I do big works sometimes, I use a lot of space in my designs to emphasise the anatomy, that’s why some very big tattoos might take less time. My longest tattoo took 16 hours, of course we completed it in three sessions.

Do you prefer working in colour or black ink?

It depends on the individual’s vibe. Sometimes I make suggestions when I believe some colours would look good on the design, even if my client had black in mind. Mostly they give me the freedom to go with whatever I have in mind. I appreciate it a lot and do my best to come up with a design that we both love.

What tattoo projects have you been working on?

Lately I have been studying traditional Turkish calligraphy (hat) and interpreting it with my tattoo designs. I am looking forward to sharing it with my followers very soon!

What’s really been getting you excited? 

I am excited about the future. Meeting new people, doing new projects, being part of fun collaborations and inspiring the newcomers!

What do you want to do in the future?

I want to start a YouTube channel and share the experience I have with people. To this day I have learnt a lot of things online, and made too many important decisions with the help of people on the internet. Well, I want to give back to the community whatever I can!

What’s been your proudest moment?

The sernakkab works came out as my final project when I was studying at university. Being the only one in the university who did artwork with tattooing was a proud moment for me. I always love to play around with the limits of the materials, give them different purposes to bring out anything progressive. Finding a sweet spot between traditional marbling and contemporary tattooing was one of them.

Interview with Santa Perpetua

Tattoo artist Santa Perpetua creates impressively abstract tattoos in her private studio in Brighton. We chat to Santa about how her tattoos tell stories and how her career started…

How long have you been tattooing and how did you start? I think art has been part of my life since I was born. My mother is an artist too, and she basically introduced me into this world. I grew up with art books, pencils and brushes around, art museums were my playground and drawing was my first way to connect with myself. But my interest in the tattoo industry started a while after that. It began when I got my first tattoo piece done in my home town: Montevideo. By that time I was 21, but I didn’t immerse myself in that world until 10 years later.  A bad economic situation at that moment, my university studies, my current job as a designer and photographer, my passion for drawing, moving to Spain and some other personal circumstances made the task of starting to tattoo a bit difficult.

So although I really was into the idea of becoming a tattoo artist, I had to postpone it for a while. It became possible when I finally got settled in Barcelona and since 2008 I’ve been developing myself in the profession. Strange as it might sound, I didn’t like tattoos before. I got my first piece done in the early 90s and the level of tattooing was not as good as it is today.

But for some  reason, I felt the need to record a permanent memory on my skin, so I made a really simple, silly, too small and too detailed for its size design and I went for it! When I was sat in the tattoo chair, I had a very primitive introduction to tattooing and I completely felt in love with it! I always liked to try different media to make my drawings, and tattooing was another one of them. When finallyI was able to start, I knew immediately that tattooing would be part of my life for good. Since I started I’ve never stopped learning, creating and loving this profession.

Your style is incredibly abstract, how would you describe it? Well, I don’t think we should label things in art. From my view, art allows the emotional expression of the artist to become real. My pieces could fall into abstraction, avant garde, conceptual, graphic art, contemporary tattooing. But if I had to describe them, I’d say that my artworks are just my personal approach to things. I always tell stories that are beyond a particular situation or representation. I love speaking about life, death, and emotions through my artwork. If someone comes to my studio asking to have a bird done, I always ask why they have chosen a bird. I am interested in the motivations behind the tattoo rather than the elements of it. My intention is to build a solid idea, as timeless and universal as possible rather that making just a “pretty” or “cool” image on the skin. I know it might sound a bit ambitious, but my approach to tattooing is more artistic than aesthetic.

Are you inspired by any artists? I am mad about the Dark Ages. I absolutely love that time in history. I get inspiration from the way in which art and artists were conceived – the artistic expression is divine and the artist is just a tool to represent it. But beyond that, and even admiring lots of tattoo colleagues, I mainly get my inspiration from dreaming, and also from music and painting. The list of artists on both branches is pretty long and super varied. But summing up, I’d say that everything that is well made catches my attention.

Would do you like to tattoo? Do you have a wish list of designs? After 10 years of working as a tattoo artist, and almost five years doing it in the UK, I could happily say that I have reached the point in which I do exactly what I want to do. It has been a super thorny path to achieve, but today people tend to give me free reign on all my designs. Thanks to this I’ve managed to evolve technically and artistically. Every tattoo project I take is a challenge that pushes me to improve and do my best with it, and that is extremely pleasant to me. I do not have a wish list of designs, but I do have the wish to carry on being blessed with people who connect with my artwork and trust their skin in my hands. I am immensely grateful for that.
